Landfills have an interesting mission laid out for them: They are designed with state-of-art technology and systems to collect and keep trash in a way that preserves the health of the surrounding environment, countryside and city-scape alike. At the same time, the job of companies like EnviroSolutions, Inc. is to keep as much waste out of landfills as possible. In a strange way, true success for a waste management company is an empty landfill!

Obviously, your local landfill is ready and able to take in any waste generated by those whom it serves, but if there is another way to reuse or recycle, then that should always be the first option. For the most part, this is a sentiment shared by many all over the United States. But, although many people are familiar with recycling, not as many understand the science and proper methods of composting. With that in mind, here is a list of organic items that you may not have known can be composted.

  1. Spent tea bags – string and paper included.
  2. Rip up a pizza box and toss it in the compost bin.
  3. Most paper napkins and towels.
  4. Brown paper bags for that matter.
  5. Plates and cups that don’t have a coating of any kind.
  6. Cereal boxes – toss ‘em in!
  7. Wine corks.
  8. Egg cartons.
  9. Toothpicks and chopsticks.
  10. Beer.
  11. Pluck your hairbrush for hair.
  12. Toilet paper tubes (tubes from towels as well).
  13. Nail clippings.
  14. Lint from your dryer.
  15. The shavings of pencils.
  16. Old receipts.
  17. Latex balloons—although they may take a while.
  18. Dog and cat hair.
  19. The droppings of small animals – think birds and hamsters.
  20. The old Christmas tree. Chop it into small pieces for best results.

A good rule of thumb to go by when deciding whether or not something is organic is to ask whether it is natural. If it’s a fiber that you wear or use to carry stuff around in, chances are it is compostable once its current form has outlived its usefulness. So, don’t fill the trashcan with items that can decompose out behind the garage. All this material has the ability to disappear back into the earth where it came from. As an added bonus, compost can be used to fertilize soil, so if you like gardening, composting can save you money.
